Preaching the Word
Course in Homiletics – Lesson 1
The Preacher’s or Teacher’s Message
No salvation if no calling;
No calling if no believing;
No believing if no hearing;
No hearing if no preaching;
No preaching if no
sending.
This is the summary of the tenth chapter of the Epistle to the Romans,
which is one of the most irresistible pieces of logic. Withdrawing some of the
intermediate steps we are left with: “no preachers, no salvation”. God has
elected that His saving work should be accomplished through the medium of
preachers.
“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the
gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good
things!” (Romans 11: 15)
How welcome then, is the arrival of the preacher! And, we may well add, ‘how
heavy are his responsibilities too’. How important that he should have a full
understanding of his message and an equal understanding of the way to convey it
clearly and clearly to those who are still unsaved! The preacher who feels the
beauty and the responsibility of his task will certainly spare no pains in
order to gain a clear and comprehensive idea of his message and to become
proficient and effective in his methods to convey the Gospel. Yet it is only
too easy to be mistaken not only about methods but even about the message.
